2012 Expected to Generate $4Billion Revenue from Location Based Services

ABI Research in its recent report has revealed that there is a continuous growth in the GPS-enabled health and fitness application market. The application download is expected to cross 100m in 2012.

At present, in order to have their market presence felt, healthcare companies prefer a freemium model that is not much revenue oriented. But, the sector has got huge potential and we are expecting fitness device partnerships in the coming year.

Companies like life360 and Sprint are currently leaders in mobile fitness app market and are expecting total downloads to reach 37 million.

Patrick Connolly, Senior Analyst at ABI Research said, "Location based services aren't doing great on advertising side but overall revenue in 2012 is growing. Almost 70 percent of Yelp's 2011 revenue is coming from local advertising that shows the "search and discover" vertical is attracting consumer interest". He added, "Other than having 70 million monthly active users, Yelp has bagged partnerships with Microsoft and Apple".

ABI Research has forecasted that enterprise sector will enjoy strong revenue growth.
The carrier navigation space discreetly needs new applications and business models. Big names including TeleNav, TCS, and Telemap have illustrated emerging regions, which needs to be covered in carrier navigation space. Roaming is a major concern for off-board solutions in Europe and carriers consider navigation as a necessary feature for high-end device users. Therefore, the issue has to be resolved with a robust solution to further improve the growth of LBS.
